Earlier this year, Google anounced that Gemini will be released to Wear OS smartwatches, and the rollout started with the launch of the Galaxy Watch 8 series last week. Now, it appears that the company has released Gemini for older Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watches in Samsung's lineup, and you can now install the app on your Galaxy Watch.
The Gemini app is now available on the Play Store, and has arrived as an update to the Google Assistant app. You can install it on any Wear OS-based Galaxy Watch. We installed it on our Galaxy Watch 4 that is running Wear OS 5-based One UI 6.0 Watch software. However, as you can see in the screenshots below, even after installing Gemini, which took a while, it hasn't replaced Google Assistant just yet.

While the Play Store displays the app's name as Gemini, the app launcher displays the Google Assistant logo. And when you open the app, it displays Google Assistant's user interface. We think that while Google has released Gemini for Wear OS smartwatches, the modern AI assistant only works on devices that are running Wear OS 6.

Since the Galaxy Watch 4 hasn't received the Wear OS 6-based One UI 8 Watch software yet, it will be limited to Google Assistant for now. While there were some doubts regarding Galaxy Watch 4's One UI 8 Watch compatibility, Samsung confirmed to us last week that it will release the One UI 8 Watch update to the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. They won't get the beta version of the new software, though.
So, until the One UI 8 Watch update arrives for your Galaxy Watch, you will likely have to rely on Google Assistant. It is perfectly usable in its current state, but Gemini is much better at understanding context and ties in with Samsung's stock apps, including Samsung Health.
As you can see in our hands-on video above, One UI 8 Watch brings a redesigned interface with new grid and list layouts for the app launcher, new styling for Tiles, and the ability to add multiple Tiles on the same screen. It also brings the Now Bar to Galaxy Watches to display ongoing activities like maps navigation, music playback, Samsung Health workouts, more double pinch gestures, and a new charging animation, among other things.
