The Galaxy XR is Samsung's first extended reality headset that's powered by Google's Android XR platform. Samsung is also reportedly working on two smart glasses, one of which is expected to be launched early next year.
Google will provide the platform for both form factors, and the company has now hinted at some exciting new updates for Android XR that will be announced next week.
Google had announced Android XR in December last year, and that's also when we got the first glimpse of the Samsung Galaxy XR headset.
It's now following up that event with an “XR Edition” livestream on December 8, 2025 at 10 a.m. PT. The company will showcase some “exciting” updates about the platform during this livestream.
The focus will be on the XR platform across a range of devices, including “glasses, headsets, and everything in between.” Gemini will feature in these announcements, as the AI agent plays a pivotal role in the functionality of Android XR products.
This would be a good opportunity for Samsung to provide a glimpse of its first smart glasses. Reports suggest that we may see it being launched in the first few months of 2026. This would be a nice way to get some hype going ahead of the new year.
Even if Samsung doesn't show off the device, perhaps Google may reveal something about the software functionality, which may give us an idea of what to expect from this product.
It will also be interesting to see how Google plans to improve the Android XR software on headsets. The experience has largely been the same from the time this platform was first unveiled, so it's about time that the next big wave of new features was rolled out.
