With the launch of the Galaxy Watch 8 series, Samsung appears to have painted itself into a corner, and I'm wondering if we'll ever see a circular Galaxy Watch from Samsung ever again. The company may have ended an era, and with the new design language representing more than a visual change, the time for circular Galaxy Watches might be gone for good.
At Unpacked 2025, Samsung went all-in on what it calls a “Cushion Design” for the Galaxy Watch series. All three smartwatches unveiled at the event have a similar basic shape consisting of a squircle base with a circular display on top. And judging by Samsung's claims, this design language might be here to stay.
To refresh your memory, Samsung not only advertised the Cushion Design language for its fresh aesthetics but also its practical benefits. According to the company, this squircle smartwatch shape, combined with the Dynamic Lug system, ensures a better fit on the wrist.
In turn, a smartwatch that fits better on the wrist will deliver better fitness and health tracking accuracy. This is why the Galaxy Watch 8 is supposedly more accurate than the Galaxy Watch 7, despite both watches using the same BioActive sensor.
By now, I think you know where I'm going with this. If Samsung says the Cushion, a.k.a. squircle design, is practically superior to the circular one, why would the company create another circular smartwatch ever again? It probably won't. Right?

Samsung may have boxed itself in. As it stands now, I don't think Samsung can easily release another circular smartwatch without having to do a lot of explaining.
Then again, I'm sure that if the squircle shape doesn't generate enough sales and Samsung decides to revert to the circular smartwatch formula, it can invent other ways to improve the sensor's accuracy and compensate for the different shape.
But at the end of the day, I find it interesting that Samsung appears to have taken such a risk. Samsung was so committed to this new design language that it almost guaranteed no more circular smartwatches anytime soon. Not unless all three new smartwatches unveiled at Unpacked fail so hard that a drastic change in direction is required. But that's most likely not the case — even though we don't have any pre-order figures yet.
For the time being, I'd say that the future of Samsung wearables will continue to be based on the Cushion Design formula. And smartwatches like the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic may truly become classics and more unique as time goes by.
If you are a fan of the new Galaxy Watch 8 series or the refreshed Galaxy Watch Ultra, check your local Samsung e-shop for pre-order offers while they're still available. The new watches will go on sale globally later this week without pre-order perks in tow.
