Samsung unveiled its newest and most advanced foldable phones last night. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 bring multiple improvements, including bigger screens. While the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a bigger battery to back up its bigger screens, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn't. So, what is the reason behind it?
We asked Samsung why it gave the Galaxy Z Flip 7 a bigger battery but not to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. And the company's answer was pretty straight forward. It said bigger battery is what most Galaxy Z Flip series users demanded. For the Galaxy Z Fold 7, there were other priorities, like better cameras, a thinner and lighter body, and a wider cover screen.

However, we think that's not the sole reason behind the company's decision. No Galaxy Z Fold user would say no to a bigger battery. Currently, there is no race among smartphone brands for launching thinner flip-style foldable phones. Hence, companies are trying to fit bigger cover screens, better cameras, and bigger batteries in them.
In the book-style foldable smartphone segment, though, there is an extremely competitve race to launch thinnest and lightest phones. So, Samsung was forced to focus on making the Galaxy Z Fold 7 thinner and lighter, and the company largely succeeded. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the world's lightest book-style foldable phone and the world's second-most thinnest foldable phone.
Until Samsung starts using silicon carbon anode batteries in Galaxy phones, there won't likely be any significant improvements in their battery capacity while maintaining the current thickness.
After the Galaxy Note 7 battery fire fiasco, Samsung has been extremely careful in increasing the battery capacity of its phones, and unless it is completely satisfied by the long-term durability and safety of silicon carbon batteries, it will likely not ship them in its devices.
