Update: It turns out that Samsung DeX works both wired and wirelessly on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which is fantastic news for fans of the desktop environment.

There was some confusion regarding support for wired DeX on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, partly because One UI 8 appears to have renamed the DeX quick toggle to “Wireless DeX” and partly because the Samsung DeX settings menu in One UI 8 no longer shows the “Auto start when HDMI is connected” toggle front and center.

However, wired DeX does work on the Galaxy Z Flip 7, and we have been able to confirm this using an old Samsung DeX dock.

Thanks for the tip, Dave.

Original story follows:

Samsung's new Galaxy Z Flip 7, unveiled at Unpacked 2025, might represent the most radical change in the series to date. It's thinner, has bigger main and cover screens, and for the first time in the lineup, it is powered by an Exynos chip rather than a Qualcomm solution.

More to the point, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is the first Flip ever to support Samsung DeX — the desktop platform available on other Galaxy flagship phones and tablets. But there is one caveat.

You won't get the best DeX performance from the Flip 7

Galaxy Z Flip 7 users will be able to open the foldable flip phone and run Samsung DeX on an external display, such as a TV or monitor. However, it looks like the Flip 7 supports only wireless DeX.

You won't be able to connect the Galaxy Z Flip 7 to a monitor or a TV via HDMI. The upside to wireless DeX is that you don't need extra cables. The downside is that wireless DeX doesn't deliver the same performance as wired DeX.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 takes a step in the right direction, considering that no other Flip supports DeX. Nevertheless, this limitation exists and is something to consider if you plan on using your new flip phone as a pocketable desktop PC.

Previously, Samsung said it was unable to add Samsung DeX support to the Flip series because of insufficient “heatproof performance in the structure.” However, since the Galaxy Z Flip 7 has a larger footprint, this may have allowed Samsung to implement DeX, albeit wirelessly, without running into overheating issues with the Exynos 2500 chip.

All in all, if you plan on using DeX extensively on your foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 remains the better option. Still, adding wireless DeX to the Flip series is a nice touch and shows that Samsung is listening.

Whether future Flip models will overcome their limitations and adopt wired DeX is unknown, but this is a good start. And, in case you're wondering, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE does not support DeX at all. Only the full-fledged Flip 7 does.
