Samsung has repackaged and re-released some of its older hardware in 2025, and this strategy has led to some quirks at the company's e-shop. Once the latest foldable phones and wearables became available for pre-order, we noticed that some offers didn't make a lot of sense.

We previously highlighted how trading-in the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) for the refreshed model seems like a bad idea. We also noticed that the 2024 Ultra model is still available at Samsung's e-shop in the USA and costs the same as the 2025 refresh. But now, we stumbled on what might be the worst Samsung deal to date.

Pay money to replace your phone with an inferior version

Samsung announced its first Fan Edition foldable phone at Unpacked 2025. The new Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is the cheapest in the series, but at $899, it still feels overpriced.

What I find worse is that you can trade-in the Galaxy Z Flip 6 for a $500 discount on the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE and buy the Fan Edition model for $399.

This doesn't make sense, especially since Samsung's trade-in program in the USA offers $500 for your Galaxy Z Flip 6 if the phone is in good condition and free of cracks.

To put it bluntly, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is an inferior product. What you get in return for your Galaxy Z Flip 6 and $399 is the same phone, repackaged with a weaker Exynos 2400 (versus the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3) chipset, 4GB less RAM, and a marginal Bluetooth 5.4 upgrade (from 5.3) you likely won't notice.

On the plus side, you will get quicker access to One UI 8 by swapping out your Galaxy Z Flip 6 for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. And as a newer model, the FE will be supported for longer. But we can't justify paying $399 for these benefits, especially given the other hardware downgrades.

Furthermore, you can exchange the Galaxy Z Flip 6 for the non-FE Galaxy Z Flip 7, which is a proper upgrade. And here's the kicker. Samsung will give you a better $600 trade-in discount in this case, which will allow you to upgrade to the 2025 flagship for $499.

In other words, you can pay $399 for a downgrade or $499 for an upgrade.

All in all, if you want to join the Flip side this year and the Flip 7 simply isn't within your budget, you could consider buying the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE (assuming you can't find the Flip 6 at a discount). But if you already own the Galaxy Z Flip 6, I think you might want to avoid this Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE trade-in offer at all costs.

Keep in mind that trade-in discounts vary by market, and the offers above are specific to Samsung's e-shop in the USA. They may also be available only for a limited time, which means that Galaxy Z Flip 6 owners might get an even worse deal once the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE pre-order window closes.
