Apple is finally expected to launch its first foldable phone, likely called the iPhone Fold, next year. It's a bit too late to the party, because Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold 8 in 2026.

The company has a high bar to clear with its first foldable iPhone. Being a first-generation product, it will be judged on many aspects against a very established competitor in the Galaxy Z Fold, and there may be one big problem.

iPhone Fold could be 20% more expensive than the Galaxy Z Fold 8

It's unclear how much Apple is going to charge for this phone, but reports suggest that it could be more expensive than its Samsung rival.

A note being circulated by Fubon Research claims that the price for Apple's first foldable iPhone may be $2,399 based on the firm's supply chain analysis and the margin that Apple typically shoots for with its hardware.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 starts at $1,999 and there's no reason as yet to believe that Samsung is aiming to increase the price in 2026. If the expected price is correct, it would make the iPhone Fold a full 20% more expensive compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Would customers be willing to pay such a hefty premium for a first-generation device compared to the proven quantity that is the Galaxy Z Fold? Apple will certainly find buyers for the phone, as brand loyalists will no doubt shift to the foldable since they've been waiting for it to finally be launched.

What Apple may find a bit more difficult is to attract those who have been on the fence about foldables, particularly those who may be willing to shift from Android. Anyone who's already in the Samsung ecosystem will find the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as a more compelling option based on price, and other Android users may feel the same.
