The Galaxy A5x has become one of Samsung's most attractive phone series, thanks to significant improvements in hardware and build quality every generation. However, if there's something that's been holding back the lineup year after year, I believe it's the macro camera.

Samsung will have to work hard to make the Galaxy A57 a worthy successor to the awesome A56, but it's not an impossible task. The company has plenty of room for choice on what to improve for the 2026 model, but if you ask me, letting go of the macro camera is the best thing it could do. Here's why.

The case of telephoto versus macro cameras

Arguably, macro cameras on Galaxy A phones are borderline useless. Or at least, they're a gimmick that most users forget after a week or two. They'll take a few close-up photos and never use the macro sensor again.

Generally speaking, you can get more use out of a telephoto camera in the long run, as it lets you capture higher-quality long-range photos. Sadly, though, the Galaxy A72 was the first and last A-series phone to have one.

Samsung abandoned the thought of a telephoto camera on the A series with the follow-up model, the A73. And after Samsung shelved the A7x series, the telephoto shooter never transitioned to the A5x.

I hope that Samsung considers the idea and brings back the telephoto camera for the A-series next year. I think it's time for the Galaxy A5x, and particularly the Galaxy A57, to ditch the macro shooter in favor of a telephoto camera.

Or how about an honest dual-camera system instead?

Many will agree that a $500 phone isn't suited for a cheap macro camera. I'd argue that Samsung's cheap macro cameras on Galaxy A phones are so forgettable that the Galaxy A57 might be better off without one, even if it means a plain reduction in the number of sensors.

In other words, even if Samsung can't or doesn't want to replace the macro sensor on the Galaxy A57 with a telephoto shooter, the phone might be better off without either one.

A dual-camera system would at least seem more honest than the current strategy of leveraging the cheap macro camera to advertise a triple-camera system.

Without a third camera, the Galaxy A57 could cost less, or, more realistically, Samsung could use those savings to improve the phone in other areas.

It might be a hot take, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense in my mind. Of course, there are always outliers, and some would point to the dual-camera system and claim that the Galaxy A57 is a visible downgrade from the A56.

But I'm confident that many actual Galaxy A fans out there who know the lineup well would approve of this change.

Time will tell what Samsung has decided and will decide for the Galaxy A57. The phone is not yet official but may go on sale in the early part of 2026.
