Samsung achieved something big with the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Or rather, something thin. Numbers don't lie. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the world's thinnest foldable phone, and this characteristic truly plays to its advantage. But where can Samsung go from here?
The company could continue trying to make thinner Fold models moving forward, but we believe that Samsung should now shift its focus to something else: the camera housing.
From a design perspective, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is almost perfect, and the only thing that holds it back is the thick camera hump. It's both an eyesore and an obstacle to using the phone on a flat surface, like a desk.
As we briefly showed in our Galaxy Z Fold 7 review video, the phone rocks excessively when resting on a table. It's virtually impossible to use in that manner because of the off-center, bulky camera bump. Check out our video below and jump at the 2-minute mark for a quick look.
We understand that there are technical limitations to making camera housings thinner. Even so, after using the Galaxy Z Fold 7, we believe that thinning down this element should be one of Samsung's primary design concerns from now on.
To put things into perspective, we measured the Galaxy Z Fold 7 using a micrometer caliper with and without the camera housing. We only did it to compare the Fold 7 with its rivals, but our experiment also highlighted the issue that every book-like foldable phone has, i.e., bulky cameras.
The results speak for themselves. When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures 8.66mm, which is quite astonishing. However, the camera assembly almost doubles the phone's thickness to 14mm.
Considering the Galaxy Z Fold 7's other qualities, the camera hump's shortcoming is in no way a deal-breaker. Nevertheless, it is something that holds back Samsung's achievement.
Could Samsung design the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a camera housing that is flush to the back panel next year? Probably not. As we mentioned earlier, we know it's not that simple. There just isn't enough room for all the lenses and camera components to rest inside a thin 4.18mm body, which is what the Fold 7 measures when unfolded.
Nevertheless, technical advancements don't happen by themselves. Great things happen when OEMs like Samsung put their minds to it. And it is our view that if Samsung focuses on thinner cameras for the Fold series, it will pay off, at least as long as the process doesn't compromise other technical aspects.
We can only hope that Samsung agrees, understands that the Fold 7's camera bump is a deficiency, and works its magic to improve future Galaxy Z Fold models. Samsung fixed the Fold's bulk. Now it's time to fix the bump.
