Before the Galaxy A56 came along, the Galaxy A55 was the best mid-range Samsung phone you could buy. But for me, the A55 is also one of the most unusual phones in recent memory because of the legacy it carries.

What do I mean by this? It's probably not what you'd expect, but I'm referring to all the unusual spin-offs the Galaxy A55 spawned last year. And in an era where Samsung appears to be trying to avoid confusing its mid-range phone buyers, the Galaxy A55 and its spin-offs sure went against the grain.

All the odd Galaxy A55 variations can make anyone's head spin

I'm a big supporter of the idea that Samsung should keep its low-cost and mid-range phone lineups as streamlined as possible.

Thankfully, the Galaxy A series is usually well contained, even though the M and F-branded spin-offs, available in select markets like India, add a bit of confusion.

But 2024, in particular, was a weird one for the mid-range device portfolio. The Galaxy A55 and its M, F, and C-branded spin-offs are the worst offenders in recent years.

Here is a quick recap of how the lineup developed in 2024.

    • March 11, 2024: Galaxy A55 gets announced for the global market.
    • March 28, 2024: Galaxy M55 goes official.
    • April 22, 2024: A spin-off exclusive to China, the Galaxy C55, is unveiled.
    • May 17, 2024: Samsung announces the Galaxy F55.
    • September 23, 2024: The Galaxy M55s joins the family.

First things first, I think Samsung did too much. There are too many unnecessary variants in a single year.

Secondly, I still can't figure out Samsung's strategy regarding the C55 and F55. Not only were these two phones wrapped in leather, which was unusual enough for smartphones in 2024, but they also didn't follow the usual launch strategy.

Normally, the A-series phone comes first and then spawns an M-series spin-off. Then, Samsung rebrands the M phone as a Galaxy F device exclusive to Flipkart and other retailers in India.

Take the Galaxy A56. It was succeeded by the Galaxy M56, and the M56 was shortly followed by the rebranded F56. Simple enough.

That's not at all what happened last year. The F55 wasn't based on the M55 at all. Instead, it was a carbon copy of the China-exclusive C55.

As if that wasn't weird enough, then came the cherry on top: the Galaxy M55s. Apart from having a different paint job, the Galaxy M55s was identical to the Galaxy M55 and arrived relatively late in the year. Why does the Galaxy M55s exist? We may never know.

But I sure hope 2024 was just a fluke, and we won't need flowcharts to explain future low-cost and mid-range device portfolios.
