The Samsung conglomerate found itself in a leadership vacuum for the better part of the decade due to heir Jay Y. Lee's legal troubles. Amid his lengthy court battles, multiple stints in prison, limitations on executive authority, being cleared of charges, and prosecutors launching appeals, it's been quite a ride.

Lee and Samsung may soon put this bitter episode behind once and for all, as South Korea's Supreme Court is set to deliver the final ruling on allegations involving a controversial merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries in 2015.

The decade-long saga may finally be coming to an end

Lee has eased back into leadership at the conglomerate as legal victories were secured. He was appointed executive chairman of Samsung Electronics in 2022 but didn't regain a seat on the board despite calls for his reappointment as it would enable him to play a larger role in the management of the most important company under the conglomerate.

He was acquitted in all of the 19 charges against him stemming from the investigation into the merger back in February 2024, but the prosecution appealed the ruling to the country's Supreme Court, asking it to settle the “differences in the court and the prosecution regarding legal interpretation and judgment.”

The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict on Thursday, July 17, which coincidentally makes it exactly ten years after the merger plan for Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries was passed during a shareholders' meeting on July 17, 2015.

Samsung Electronics faces a multitude of challenges in its crucial business segments. Lee's return to the board and a more active role in management could ultimately propel the company out of its organizational inertia and chase the bold bets it needs to make for a return to glory.

That's assuming the top court rules in Lee's favor, if it finds otherwise, it may only bring more uncertainty.
