Samsung's decision to remove the S Pen Bluetooth features on the Galaxy S25 Ultra took fans of the stylus by surprise. They voiced their displeasure, but Samsung had the numbers to back its decision. The company revealed that fewer than 0.5% of users took advantage of the Bluetooth features, so it made little sense to keep them around just to appease a minority of users, albeit a very vocal one.

It nevertheless made some fans question whether this was the beginning of the end for the S Pen. Samsung's decision to not support the S Pen entirely on the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition late last year had already set off the alarm bells. They feared the company would make a similar move with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in 2025.

That's precisely what Samsung has done. It removed S Pen support entirely from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and with the company's focus now on delivering thin and light devices, it's possible that we may never see a return of the stylus on its flagship foldable. There are even concerns that Samsung may get rid of the S Pen entirely with a future Galaxy S Ultra model.

Samsung would have had the data to support its observation that removing the S Pen support from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 isn't going to negatively impact sales of the device. There would still be opposition from the loyalists but given how immense of an upgrade this device is, even they would be enticed to buy the phone without the stylus.

People have voted with their wallets in support for Samsung's decision, no matter how big of a deal the S Pen fans make this. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has become a smashing hit for Samsung. It has broken the trend of the Galaxy Z Flip model outselling its Z Fold sibling, as the overwhelming demand has been for the Fold this time around compared to the Flip.

The numbers don't lie. Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has received the most pre-orders of any Galaxy Z Fold phone so far in the US. It's outselling previous models by nearly 50% since the device became available on July 25. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 has also done spectacularly well in India where it's now out of stock in some retail centers, and the situation is likely similar in other markets across the globe.

S Pen buyers may feel very strongly that a major value proposition of Samsung's most expensive smartphone is diminished, but it doesn't matter, and the market certainly doesn't care about their feelings. They're buying the Galaxy Z Fold 7 hand over first, the S Pen be damned.

The fact is that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 didn't need this crutch. It has intense desirability on its own. Not only is it the world's thinnest smartphone, it's a genuine powerful with best-in-class tech and an elevated camera experience. The design and slim profile alone are the biggest reasons why the device is selling so well.

This only gives Samsung more confidence to go through with the beginning of the end for the S Pen if it so desires. The market is evidently not hung up on the S Pen, and it doesn't do much in terms of moving the needle to deliver more sales.

What Samsung has to ensure is that the device offers enough of a wow factor on its own that customers aren't concerned about trivial matters like these. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the perfect representation of that.

If similarly bold moves are made for a future Galaxy S Ultra model, where the company can deliver significant enhancements elsewhere, it would probably sell like crazy, no matter how much noise the vocal minority makes.
