Samsung Foundry, which is Samsung Electronics' chip fabrication division, has been struggling to find new clients for its advanced chip fabrication nodes. However, it looks like it has received a new customer in the form of Autotalks, which is Qualcomm's automotive chip designing subsidiary.

Samsung Foundry will make car chips for Autotalks

Recently, Qualcomm announced that it is acquiring Autotalks, an Israel-based automotive semiconductor chip design firm. Soon after the acquisition announcement, it was reported by DigiTimes that Autotalks visited Samsung Foundry's chip manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas in the USA last month. The company reportedly conducted mass production quality inspection and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).

Through these processes, companies verify the quality of the semiconductor chips to check if they are ready for mass production. It also involves a process to see if the chips work well with other components in the system. The collaboration between Autotalks and Samsung Foundry is said to start very soon, and the mass production of automotive chips could start as soon as this year.

Autotalks was founded in 2008, and it makes automotive chips. Earlier, it was valued at $400 million. However, Qualcomm recently acquired it for around $100 million. Qualcomm is planning to use Autotalks to expand its Snapdragon Digital Chassis ecosystem for automobiles. It will strengthen the safety system for vehicle communications. Samsung Catalyst is one of the investors in Autotalks, and it invested in the company back in 2018 when it was valued at $300 million.

Since Samsung Foundry has reportedly bagged a deal to make chips for Autotalks, its collaboration with Qualcomm is expected to increase. Apparently, Qualcomm is thinking about offering a contract to Samsung Foundry to make some of its smartphone chips.
