Samsung has remained the world's leading supplier of TVs for more than a decade. The company has consistently delivered high quality products across all price segments. Its premium TVs have particularly attracted a lot of interest from customers across the globe.
Sony's Bravia TV is a well-established legacy brand that has been around for decades. Yet, even it has found the market conditions difficult, leading Sony to basically give up control of this business to China's TCL.
Sony and TCL announced today that they will set up a new joint venture for Sony's Bravia TVs and other home entertainment devices. TCL will have the majority stake at 51% while Sony will retain 49%. Ultimately, TCL will have control over this entity that's expected to start operations in April 2027.
As per the agreement, this joint venture will operate across the globe and handle everything from product development to manufacturing, logistics, and customer service.
While future TVs will retain the Sony Bravia brand, the Japanese company will primarily be responsible for providing its superior picture processing capabilities. TCL will be responsible for the display panel and other components as well as for the manufacturing of these TVs.
TVs are a low margin business and Sony just doesn't have the synergy that Samsung and even TCL enjoys. TCL makes its own display panels and has robust manufacturing facilities. It would have been finding it difficult to compete in this very price sensitive market against both of these companies.
The next best option was then to join forces with one of them, and Sony went with TCL. This deal could result in tough competition from Samsung, as new Bravia TVs that combine Sony's excellent picture processing tech with TCL's cost-effective panels could prove to be a force to be reckoned with.
