Perplexity has been quietly establishing itself as a bonafide AI assistant even though it may not have the hype that ChatGPT has. It hasn't seen any major mobile integrations but that could be what propels Perplexity to the big leagues.

Samsung is reportedly in early talks to bring Perplexity AI to its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. If a deal materializes, Perplexity would be going up alongside Google's Gemini, which currently enjoys preferential positioning on Galaxy devices.

Gemini may have to compete with Perplexity on Galaxy devices

Perplexity has already inked a deal to bring its AI assistant to Motorola's new Razr foldable phones set to be unveiled on April 24. Bloomberg reports that these devices will feature Perplexity as a replacement of Gemini. Motorola will reportedly push users to try Perplexity and an improved UI will be offered to take full advantage of the Razr's foldable form factor.

Talks with Samsung are in early stages so it remains to be seen if a deal is reached. It could play out in several different ways, with Samsung either making Perplexity the default AI assistant, ship it as a pre-installed app or promote it front and center on the Galaxy Store.

It's unlikely that we'll see Samsung replacing Gemini with Perplexity. Google and Samsung have collaborated very closely on AI, and the former has prioritized Samsung by providing exclusive access to some features that were otherwise only available on its Pixel phones.

Many Galaxy AI features are heavily dependent on Google's services so this would not be a relationship that Samsung will upset. Perplexity is also viewed as a better AI-powered search alternative to Google Search so the company would definitely be wary of prime positioning for an upcoming rival on the world's top supplier of Android devices.

Perplexity would want to strike some sort of a deal with Samsung, though. The company ships hundreds of millions of phones globally every year, so the visibility its service can get through Galaxy devices would be immense.
