Samsung's Galaxy Watch offers a rich suite of health and fitness capabilities, including ECG, heart rate and blood pressure monitoring.

A joint clinical study conducted by Samsung and Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea has now demonstrated the Galaxy Watch's ability to predict fainting, a world-first innovation.

Future Galaxy Watch models may get this feature

The study found that Samsung's wearable has the ability to predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) with high accuracy. The study was conducted using biosignals obtained from the Galaxy Watch 6.

VVS causes people to faint when their heart rate and blood pressure drop suddenly because of factors like excessive stress. Fainting itself is not generally life-threatening, but severe injuries like fractures or concussions can be caused by sudden falls. Early prediction is therefore crucial to prevent such injuries.

The study was conducted on 132 patients with suspected VVS symptoms during induced fainting tests. Biosignals were monitored using a Galaxy Watch 6 with a photoplethysmography sensor. Heart rate variability data was analyzed by the team using an AI algorithm.

The results were impressive, with the model successfully predicting fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance with 84.6% accuracy, maintaining a meaningful clinical sensitivity of 90% and a specificity of up to 64%.

While this feature is not currently available on any Galaxy Watch models, it's likely that Samsung could introduce it down the line. The company says it plans to further enhance the health monitoring capabiliites of its wearable devices. This may be a subtle hint that fainting detection could be offered on future Galaxy Watch models.
