Samsung is widely known for its TVs, phones, and home appliances because it introduces new and useful features with its devices every year. One such feature it introduced with its home appliances in 2021 was Auto Open Door, and the company says that it is paving the way for easier interaction with home appliances.

Auto Open Door feature will come to more Samsung home appliances

The Auto Open Door feature was introduced with Samsung's Family Hub refrigerator in 2021. Since then, the company has expanded the feature to more appliances, including dryers, microwaves, washers/washing machines, and dishwashers. The feature opens the door for you by either the press of a button or via a voice command.

In washers and dryers, the feature automatically opens the door of the appliance at the end of the washing/drying cycle. With its recently launched 2025 Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Samsung added air circulation to it to reduce up to 40% of the moisture in the drum after washing the laundry.

In an article on Samsung's official blog, Nae-young Park from Samsung's Washing Machine Module Lab, and Chang-Woo Han, a member of Samsung Research's AI Solution Team, explained how the company wanted to remove simple yet longstanding issues in home appliances, leading to the development of the Auto Open Door feature. Even though it sounds simple, Samsung had to work a lot on optimising the angle and speed of opening the door so that it feels natural.

Samsung even added the ability to open the door using voice commands in appliances that have a built-in microphone. Users could do that by saying the ‘Hi Bixby‘ hotword and then saying the command “open the fridge door.” Starting this year, users don't even need to use the Bixby command. They can just say “open the fridge door,” thanks to Samsung's zero-shot text-to-speech (TTS) technology that offers improved voice recognition performance.

With its new Voice ID technology that was introduced this year, Samsung's smart appliances can distinguish between voices of each family member, and act accordingly. For example, it won't open the door if a child asks it to open the door but opens it for other members of the family.

Samsung says it will continue to improve the Auto Open Door feature and voice commands on its home appliances and bring the Auto Open Door feature to more appliances in the future.
