Leaks and rumors about Samsung’s upcoming lineup of non-foldable flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S26 series, claim that it will feature Samsung Display’s OLED display panel with Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) technology. It reduces the panel thickness, offers higher brightness, and helps displays consume less power. Well, it looks like Apple is planning to follow in Samsung’s footsteps for the 20th anniversary iPhone.

According to ETNews, Apple will use an OLED display with the COE technology from Samsung Display for the 20th anniversary iPhone, which it may launch in 2027.

OLEDs with polariser vs. OLEDs with COE

The OLED panels we see on most mobile devices nowadays have a polariser layer on top, which helps reduce reflections and improve contrast. However, it also absorbs a lot of the light the display is putting out.

On the other hand, the color filter is encapsulated directly into the OLED’s protective layer, which has many advantages. First, it reduces the panel’s thickness, which helps in reducing the thickness of the device. Second, it doesn’t absorb light from the display as the polariser, resulting in a higher percentage of brightness that the display is producing reaching the user’s eyes, which should also help in reducing the screen’s power consumption.

Samsung Display has developed an OLED with COE, and it's making its way to Galaxy S26

Recently, Samsung Display developed an OLED screen with COE, which Samsung Electronics will be using for the Galaxy S26 series. Considering that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S26 lineup in February 2026, Apple will be one year behind the South Korean tech giant in offering phones with OLED displays featuring the COE technology.
