I was and still am relatively happy with the One UI 8.0 update for the Galaxy S22+. On the bright side, it feels like the phone performs better with the new update. However, compared to my main driver, the Galaxy S24+, the older phone is starting to show its age in a few key areas.
One UI 8.0 for the S22 series is an almost complete update, but one of the things you won't have access to if you use the Galaxy S22 Ultra instead of one of its sequels is Drawing Assist. If you are a fan of the Galaxy AI drawing tool, you will miss out on some cool stuff.
More precisely, yes, the Galaxy S22 does have access to the original Sketch to Image Galaxy AI feature. And it is fairly powerful still. I had a blast using it when it debuted last year, and you can, too.
You can access Sketch to Image on the Galaxy S22 from the Edge panel, draw something on the screen, choose a style, and turn your sketch into a much more detailed AI drawing with a press of the Generate button.
But that's where the fun ends for the 2022 phones. Newer One UI versions running on the Galaxy S23 and later boast the upgraded Drawing Assist tool. The latter replaced Sketch to Image with the launch of One UI 7.0.
Drawing Assist added multimodal AI support, which is a fancy way of saying that you can give the AI instructions through text and images from your Gallery, in addition to your original sketch.

Furthermore, Sketch to Image includes only five styles: Watercolor, Illustration, Sketch, Pop Art, and 3D Cartoon. The new and improved Drawing Assist tool offers those original styles as well as:
And lastly, if you want to AI-sketch on your Galaxy S22, you will miss out on a versatile feature, a slider, that lets you control how much or little the AI will change and reinterpret your original sketch.
The Sketch Matching Strength slider has four levels, and each can giver your sketch a different tone. A higher matching strength will result in AI drawings that resemble your sketch more, sometimes even including drawing errors. A low matching strength level gives the AI more free reign to reinterpret your core idea.
Author's Note: If Drawing Assist hasn't come to the Galaxy S22 with the One UI 7.0 and One UI 8.0 updates, it most likely never will. You can still have fun with Sketch to Image, but for the better version, you'll have to upgrade your hardware.
Although Drawing Assist alone isn't or shouldn't be the sole reason to upgrade your 2022 phone, it can count as one of several, particularly if you're a fan of Sketch to Image and wouldn't mind something with a bit more power and versatility.

How is Drawing Assist better than Sketch to Image?
