Qualcomm has made it official. It has revealed the name of its next flagship smartphone chip, and a higher-clocked variant of that chip will most likely be used in Galaxy S26 series phones. The name of that Snapdragon chip is quite confusing and unusual (for Qualcomm).

Galaxy S26 could use next Snapdragon chip in some countries/models

The next flagship smartphone chip from Qualcomm is named the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It will be launched next week at the Snapdragon Summit 2025 press event in Hawaii, USA.

The new chip branding neither follows Qualcomm's previous naming convention (Snapdragon 8 Gen X), nor does it use the logical continuation (Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2) of the name of the previous-generation chip. Instead it uses a mix of two naming conventions.

Qualcomm says that the new name better reflects milestones achieved by Snapdragon chips. In late 2023, the company introduced its first ‘Elite' branded chip, featuring ‘Oryon' CPU cores developed by Nuvia, a company Qualcomm acquired in 2021. Since Qualcomm plans to continue using Oryon CPU cores in the future, the Elite branding will remain in place.

We have listed the names of previous flagship Snapdragon chips below.

    • Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
    • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
    • Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
    • Snapdragon 8 Elite (‘Gen 4')
    • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

Samsung has been using higher-clocked variants of the flagship Snapdragon 8 series chips in many of its high-end Galaxy phones. Those chips use the additional ‘for Galaxy' branding. Based on that pattern, the Snapdragon chip used in the Galaxy S26 Pro, Galaxy S26 Edge, and Galaxy S26 Ultra could be named the ‘Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy.'

However, Samsung is reportedly bringing back its dual-chip sourcing strategy for the Galaxy S26 series. So, the Galaxy S26 Pro and the Galaxy S26 Edge are said to use the Exynos 2600, Samsung's first in-house 2nm chip, in some countries and regions.

The Exynos 2600 likely uses Arm's new C1-series CPU cores under the Lumex platform. Reports have revealed that the upcoming flagship Exynos chip uses a 10-core CPU, the Xclipse 960 GPU (based on AMD's RDNA architecture), an improved ISP, and an integrated 5G modem. Samsung Foundry could start the mass production of the chip could start later this month.
