One UI 9 will allow Instagram to work as well on Galaxy phones as on iPhones

Besides introducing Android 17 features and improvements to Gemini and Wear OS, Google also revealed how it plans to attract iPhone users and content creators to the Android platform. The company has worked with Meta to improve how Instagram performs on Android. According to Google, Instagram will now work just as well on Android and Galaxy phones as it does on iPhones.

Google is promising improved camera quality for Instagram and other social media platforms, AI-powered editing tools, and professional-grade video workflows. And these improvements will come to Galaxy phones with One UI 9.0, which is based on Android 17.

Instagram supports Ultra HDR, video stabilization, and more on Android 17​

Google has partnered with Meta, the company behind Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp, to help Android devices capture better images and videos for social media apps. Google says it has optimized the entire pipeline, from image capture to the upload process, to ensure that photos and videos are uploaded in the highest possible quality.

Images and videos are captured in the Ultra HDR format, which Samsung markets as Super HDR. It offers a wider dynamic range and deeper colors. Videos are also captured with improved stabilization. In low-light conditions, Instagram now uses Googleâs Night Sight feature to deliver better details, lower noise, and improved dynamic range.

Google even claims that tests using the Universal Video Quality (UVQ) model showed that image quality on flagship Android phones is on par with, or even better than, iPhones. These improvements are in addition to optimizations Samsung achieved on Galaxy phones in partnership with Meta.

Instagramâs Edits app gets AI-powered editing tools​

Instagramâs Edits app, which launched last year, now uses on-device AI processing on Android phones to speed up image and video editing workflows. The Smart Enhance feature can easily upscale photos and videos. It can also improve details, reduce noise, and enhance brightness and dynamic range with a single tap.

The app also offers a feature called Sound Separation, which separates audio from different sources into multiple layers. Users can then mute or adjust the volume of each layer based on their preferences. It works similarly to Samsungâs Audio Eraser feature.

Google is also expanding support for Samsungâs Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec in Android 17. The company says it is currently the most storage-efficient professional video format available. However, it is presently supported only on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Vivo X300 Ultra, both of which use chips from the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 family.
