Samsung has been making Exynos chips for over 15 years. Unlike Apple and Qualcomm, however, it doesn’t make custom CPU cores for its chips anymore. It used to design custom cores for a few years but stopped the practice five years ago. A new team has now been formed to restart the development of custom CPU cores.

Samsung's System LSI division creates custom CPU development team

Samsung Electronics has reportedly reorganized its Device Solutions division recently. Chosun Media is reporting that the company has created the ‘Custom CPU Development Team' within the System LSI division. The new team will be headed by Vice President Park Bong-il, who is a System-on-Chip (SoC) design expert.

System LSI division has relied on Arm's stock CPU cores for the past few years after its Mongoose custom CPU cores failed to take off. It stopped developing custom CPU cores in 2019 after the Exynos 990 turned out to be its worst-performing chip. It was used in the Galaxy S20 series and had overheating and performance throttling issues.

This move is being seen as a way to strengthen its business competitiveness, especially amid the demand for custom chips in the global semiconductor chip market. The company can now make a truly custom chip using in-house CPU, GPU, NPU, and other blocks.

However, it appears that this custom CPU development team isn't just for making custom cores for Exynos processors. Apparently, it is planning to become a design agency like Broadcom that makes custom chips for a wide array of customers.

Overall, the company seems to be moving in a good direction. It recently designed SOCAMM2 and HBM4 memory chips, both of which are used in AI servers and are in high demand. Samsung's foundry division has also finally gotten its act together and made an advanced fabrication process (2nm) that can compete with TSMC.
