Samsung leads the way on many features and capabilities that Apple then tends to follow years down the line. One such feature is reportedly going to make its way to Apple's latest smartphone lineup.

The company is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 series at an event on September 9. The lineup may also include the rumored iPhone 17 Air, the slim competitor to the Galaxy S25 Edge.

iPhone users may finally be able to use reverse wireless charging

Rumors are now circulating that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will support reverse wireless charging. If that sounds familiar, Samsung introduced this feature way back in 2019 with the Galaxy S10 series, and called it Wireless PowerShare.

Most Samsung flagships have had this feature ever since, enabling you to charge your Galaxy Buds or Galaxy Watch using your phone's battery. Simply place the device on the phone's back to charge it up.

Apple has dabbled in this technology previously but kept its usability limited. It launched a MagSafe Battery Pack for the iPhone 12 series in 2021. The phone could charge the battery pack wirelessly if it was hooked up to a power outlet using the Lightning connector. The battery pack was discontinued in 2023 when Apple switched to USB-C.

If the rumors are true, this would be the first time that Apple enables reverse wireless charging on iPhones. The rumors claim that the new iPhone models will be able to charge devices like the Apple Watch and AirPods at 7.5W.

It's nice to see Apple finally playing catch up with Samsung. Reverse wireless charging is a useful feature, enabling you to extend the battery of your accessories when in a pinch. No official confirmation as yet, though, so let's see if this really materializes.
