Samsung has already announced its work on smart glasses, collaborating with Google for the software and fashion eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for the design. Besides Gemini, there is one killer app that could truly make these glasses popular, and it is made by Google.

Google Translate could be the killer app for Samsung's smart glasses

A new report reveals that Google is working on improvements for Google Translate so that it works well on smart glasses. Currently, the app's Live Translate feature has three audio playback options: Headphone, Mute, and Speaker. In the version 9.26.46.833192481.11 of the Translate app, a new option called ‘Glasses' was spotted. It will potentially allow language-translated audio to be played back on Android XR smart glasses.

Moreover, the Live Translate feature only works when you are actively using the app on the phone's screen, and when you switch to another app, Live Translate stops working. Google is making improvements to make it work even when it is in the background. The company is using persistent notification to allow it to work in the background.

These changes enable Google Translate’s Live Translate feature to function effectively on smart glasses. This likely prepares Google for the launch of Android XR-based smart glasses, and Samsung might be among the first brands to release such a wearable device.

Reports claim that Samsung's first-generation smart glasses will launch sometime in 2026, and they won't have an AR display. The South Korean firm's second-generation smart glasses, featuring an AR display, could debut in 2027 and will rival smart glasses from Apple and Meta.
