Samsung is expected to introduce a new foldable device later this year. Tentatively named the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, it's rumored to be a Fold-like phone with a noticeably wider aspect ratio.
Unofficial renders of the unannounced device have surfaced online before, but today, leaker Ice Universe shared a short video showing what they described as a “low-quality dummy model” of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.
According to the source, the build quality of this dummy unit is nowhere near that of the real device, and it shows. For one, the hinge appears visibly bent at the top and bottom. But that's beside the point.
Despite it being rough, the dummy model should offer a preview of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide's unusual form factor. And if the source is accurate, Samsung seems quite proud of the design. More on that later.
Aside from the wider shape, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide appears to follow the same overall design language as the existing Fold lineup. The phone has flat frames, sharp corners, and circular camera rings embedded into a larger oblong camera housing.
The other interesting detail shared alongside the video concerns Samsung's internal development team.
The source said, “Samsung's internal testers are actually very fond of this device.”
The assumption is that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide stands out because its form factor feels fresh and unlike most devices currently on the market.
Of course, Samsung won't have exclusivity over this type of design. In fact, Apple's first foldable iPhone is also rumored to adopt a similar shape and aspect ratio. So, not only is the Fold 8 Wide exciting in its own right, but it might be the spark that creates a new foldable phone niche for other brands.
