Samsung USA has finally caught up with the rest of the world and released the Galaxy A56. The phone became available in the USA late last week, and you can buy it for $499 with no strings attached or trade-in deals.

The question I'm trying to answer right now is whether it's worth upgrading to the Galaxy A56 if you are a Galaxy A54 owner. As you likely know, Samsung never released the A55 in the USA, so the new A56 is the first sequel and upgrade for A54 users in the last two years.

The short answer is yes, the Galaxy A56 is more than a worthy sequel to your aging Galaxy A54. But is it worth the trade-in price? That mostly depends on your budget and what you're willing to spend for a better phone (the S24 FE is another upgrade option). All we can tell you is why the Galaxy A56 is a great sequel. Here's what you need to know.

Enjoy a noticeably larger and brighter screen

Before we go into more technical details, we want to touch on the most obvious difference between the Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A56: screen size.

The Galaxy A56 has a 6.7-inch display instead of a 6.4-inch panel, which makes it a better phone for consuming media content and playing mobile games.

And if size isn't everything, keep in mind that the Galaxy A56 has a much brighter screen that can reach 1,900 nits of peak brightness (and 1,200 nits HBM, up from 1,000 nits).

The Galaxy A56 does what the A54 was supposed to and more

When Samsung announced the Galaxy A54 in 2023, it marked the first time the company claimed two-day battery life. Of course, if you are a Galaxy A54 (or even Galaxy A55) owner, you know that claim was not very accurate.

Well, the Galaxy A56 is truly the first in the series to be able to deliver two days of battery life with ease. As we mentioned in our review earlier this year, we got 52 hours on a full charge with a whopping eight hours of screen-on time.

The other thing you will immediately notice once you upgrade from the Galaxy A54 to the A56 is that the newer phone runs a lot smoother. Indeed, the Exynos 1580 chip does surprisingly well, and again, the Galaxy A56 is the first in the series to deliver smooth performance across One UI.

As for photography enthusiast, not only does the Galaxy A56 offer a better selfie camera, but the overall experience is superior thanks to enhanced speed. Here are a couple of fun facts.

    • While the Galaxy A54 takes 800 ms to shoot one photo, the Galaxy A56 takes only 240 ms, which is comparable to the Galaxy S24.
    • While the A55 takes 980 ms to switch between lenses, the Galaxy A56 does it in only 430 ms.

As for other notable upgrades, here is a breakdown of everything you will enjoy if you trade up from your Galaxy A54 to the new Galaxy A56.

    • A larger and brighter Super AMOLED display.
    • Vastly superior build quality, including Gorilla Glass Victus+ panels and an aluminum frame (instead of plastic).
    • A more modern design.
    • A faster SoC and 8GB of RAM. Way better UI performance.
    • Better and faster cameras.
    • Two-day battery life (truly).
    • Faster 45W wired charging.
    • Android 15-based One UI 7 out of the box and up to six OS upgrades instead of four.

What will you lose if you upgrade?

Upgrading from the Galaxy A54 to the Galaxy A56 in the USA isn't free. You will have to give up on one feature and some cash.

First, you must be ready to forego expandable storage. The Galaxy A56 doesn't have any.

Second, if you want to trade up from the Galaxy A54, you'll have to pay $349 or slightly more, depending on the condition of your A54. Is it worth it?

Well, the Galaxy A56 went on sale in the USA for $499 without a trade-in, which isn't a bad price considering the phone's qualities.

Paying $349 instead is even better, but whether or not you think it's fair for Samsung to evaluate your Galaxy A54 at a maximum of $150 after two years is another matter. That's up for you to decide.

Technically speaking, the Galaxy A56 is more than a worthy upgrade and a vastly superior phone to the Galaxy A54 across the board, except expandable storage. And if you own an even older Galaxy A5x, the new A56 is even better.

But keep in mind that, if you can spare a little bit of extra cash, another solid option is to trade your Galaxy A54 for a smaller discount on the Galaxy S24 FE.
