Samsung finally launched the Galaxy A17 in more markets, including Europe, last month. Galaxy A15 users who want an upgrade or a replacement might be looking toward the Galaxy A17 for an answer. Is it the right one?

Well, it can be, but with one big caveat. The Galaxy A17 is the second phone in the A1x line to lack a 3.5mm headphone port. Yes, the portless design has reached even budget phones, and in fact, the A17 is the second one to ditch this feature.

In short, if you use wired headphones with your Galaxy A15 and you upgrade to the Galaxy A17, this is one thing you'll have to change. You can't use 3.5mm headphones with the newer phone.

Your options are USB-C or wireless headphones and earbuds. And if you can afford spending a little extra, neither option is bad.

As far as the newer phone goes, the Galaxy A17 has a few neat tricks up its sleeve that should help you forget the missing 3.5mm port. Some notable features that Galaxy A15 users might like are:

    • A larger 6.7-inch (vs 6.5-inch) screen.
    • A splash-resistant IP54 build.
    • A newer design language and Gorilla Glass Victus screen protection.
    • A new 50MP main camera with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS).
    • Extended firmware support with up to 6 major OS upgrades.
    • The Galaxy A17 is also slimmer at 7.5mm instead of 8.4mm.

Also worth keeping in mind is that the Galaxy A17 is available with 4G or 5G connectivity, and the former variant is cheaper. However, in some markets, you will only find one or the other.

And lastly, depending on your market, you may be able to get a better price on the Galaxy A17 if you use the trade-in or recycling program and exchange your Galaxy A15.

Conclusion for Galaxy A15 users

All in all, the Galaxy A17 is probably not worth the trouble if you already own a perfectly functioning Galaxy A15 and you can't find a decent trade-in deal. On the one hand, the A17 comes with a few upgrades, but if the upgrade cost is too high, you may be better off keeping your A15 for one or two more years until it loses firmware support.

However, if you just need a replacement rather than a massive upgrade, the Galaxy A17 is a good choice as long as you don't care that much about the loss of the 3.5mm port.

Wireless headphones do have many advantages, so if the missing 3.5mm port is your only concern, you may want to reconsider. Going wireless can feel liberating. You'll know this if you ever got your headphone's wire tangled into clothing, door knobs, or other objects.

And if the Galaxy Buds FE or Buds 3 FE are too pricey, you can find more budget-oriented Bluetooth headphones even outside the Galaxy range. Samsung's subsidiary, JBL, makes a few decent-looking wireless budget sets. You'll find them on Samsung's e-shop in most markets.

Sooner or later, you will have to give up on your 3.5mm port. And for many Galaxy A15 users, the A17 might just be the first step toward Samsung's portless future.
