Samsung recently unveiled the world's first 2nm smartphone chip, the Exynos 2600. It is expected to be used in the Galaxy S26 series early next year. Apparently, the Exynos 2600 is also the South Korean firm's first smartphone chip with an in-house GPU, which makes it a significant achievement.
A report from Yonhap News Agency claims that the Xclipse 960 GPU inside the Exynos 2600 was developed in-house by Samsung using AMD's architecture. Since the launch of the Exynos 2200, Samsung has been using GPUs that use AMD's architecture and are co-developed by AMD and Samsung. Now, Samsung has now independently developed a GPU using AMD's architecture.

A graphics processing unit (GPU) is an extremely vital part of any system-on-chip (SoC). It helps in processing graphics used in games and the user interface. A power-efficient and powerful GPU is a necessity in modern-day high-end phones, tablets, and laptops.
Apparently, Samsung first started with the development of GPUs for the Windows operating system. Then, after implementing low-power and high-performance features and optimising it for the Android operating system, the company developed a mobile GPU. This development is significant, as only AMD, Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm have succeeded in designing in-house GPUs.
Starting with the Exynos 2800 chip, it is reported that Samsung will even stop using AMD's GPU architecture. This means the company will not take any help from AMD for making GPUs for future Exynos chips. It will help Samsung in reducing the cost and reliance on other companies.
