Kars (Armenian: Կարս, less commonly known as Ղարս Ghars, Kurdish: Qers) is a city in northeast Turkey and the capital of Kars Province. Its population 73,836 as of 2011.
The town appears as located in the ancient region known as Chorzene, (in greek Χορζηνή) in classical historiography (Strabo) as part of Roman Armenia. The name "Kars" may be derived from the Armenian word հարս (hars), meaning "bride", or rather from կառուց բերդ (kaṛuts berd), "Kaṛuts Fortress".. One hypothesis has it that the name derives from the Georgian word კარი (kari), meaning "the gate" as was the case for other border region strongholds. The Turkish etymology offered by M. Fahrettin Kırzıoğlu (that the name came from the "Karsak", a Turkish tribe), has been dismissed as unsustainable by scholars. As mayor of Kars Ayhan Bilgen from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) was elected in 2019. The current Kaymakam is Nur Sevinç Özbek.
