Many Samsung phones, not just flagships, have featured chipsets and other components from Qualcomm. The San Diego-based company was sued by consumer right group Which? in 2021 for allegedly charging Samsung and Apple higher licensing rates for its technology, thus leading to higher prices for customers.
The case was allowed to proceed in 2022 and will soon be heading to trial. If Qualcomm loses, those in the UK who bought the impacted devices will be eligible for a portion of the £480 million or $645 million award sought by the rights group.
It's important to note here that the amount each individual user gets if Qualcomm loses the trial would be worth little more than a cup of coffee. It will be divided among countless Samsung and Apple device owners, with each receiving around $20.
According to the BBC, almost 30 million people who bought those phones in the UK between 2015 and 2024 will be eligible. The trial, due to begin on Monday, is expected to last five weeks. Qualcomm hasn't commented on the impending trial, but the company had previously said that this case had “no basis.”
Qualcomm has faced similar lawuits in the past. It was sued by the US Federal Trade Commission over allegations of forcing device makers to pay high license fees for using certain key components and restricting licensing for competitors.
While the FTC initially won in 2019, the verdict was overturned by the Court of Appeals in 2020, with the FTC essentially leaving the matter as it decided not to take the case to the supreme court.
Customers who bought a Samsung device during this period don't need to do anything right now. They will automatically be eligible for the payout if Qualcomm loses the trial and is made to pay this huge sum of money.
