What did I just watch? Did Samsung just call its QLED TV rivals fake clowns?

I was browsing YouTube last night and came across what I can only describe as one of the weirdest series of Samsung ads I've ever seen. It promotes Samsung's QLED TVs while seemingly labeling the competition as clowns who try to trick you out of your money.

In total, I found three YouTube Short ads featuring the unsettling clown who laughs at the viewer for choosing the wrong TV brand. Or am I reading too much into it? I'm not sure what to make of this ad campaign, but it is fairly unforgettable. You can find the three YouTube Shorts embedded below if you want to check them out, assuming you don't fear clowns.

The format is the same every time. In each Short, the creepy clown, which I'm guessing represents Samsung's QLED TV rivals, opens a food spot in a new city and advertises products at half the price.

50% off sounds great, until you realize that every food item is fake and missing key ingredients. So you're not really getting your money's worth.

    • The sushi rolls the clown is selling in Japan are just rice balls with a dollop of wasabi on top.
    • The clown's tacos in Mexico don't have a shell.
    • In the USA, the hot dogs that are sold at half price are just empty buns with no sausage.

What does this have to do with Samsung's TVs? Well, Samsung says that without fish, it's not sushi. Without a tortilla, it's not a taco. And without sausage, it's not a hot d**.

Similarly, without a blue backlight, it's not QLED. And without a QD sheet, it's not a real QLED.

Note: A QD sheet refers to quantum dot films or quantum dot diffuser plates.

The ads culminate with the trickster clown laughing at the camera and a song that urges viewers to “choose real” because everything else is fake. It's weird, but it is kind of catchy.

The funniest part, I think, is that Samsung is essentially calling its QLED TV competitors clowns who try to scam customers out of their money. At least, that's how I interpret it.

But are these YouTube Shorts ads actually funny? They're definitely weird, that much I can say. And, to a degree, they feel like they were dreamt up by an AI. You should check them out below and see for yourself.

On a more serious note, if you are in the market for a new TV, Samsung's latest top-tier Neo QLED models really are fantastic, regardless of how you feel about these ads and clowns in general. I have been using the (2023) QN90C Neo QLED since the beginning of 2024, and I still love it.

Interestingly, you can often find Samsung's Neo QLED TVs at significant discounts, especially models from previous years. Maybe not for 50% off, but cheap enough to really make it worth it. And according to Samsung, these aren't fake QLED panels. These are the real ones.
