MVNOs or Mobile Virtual Network Operators license telecom infrastructure from a provider like T-Mobile and sell cellular services under their own pricing and brand. They're quite popular among customers in the US for their affordable and flexible plans.

It was possible to use your locked Samsung Galaxy phone purchased from T-Mobile on MVNOs in the US before, but not anymore. T-Mobile is now enforcing its policy to not allow devices locked on its network to work on these virtual networks.

T-Mobile clamps down on unrestricted access to MVNOs

T-Mobile had previously allowed locked phones to be used on MVNOs that utilize its infrastructure. These include popular US virtual networks such as Mint Mobile, Tello, US Mobile, Simple Mobile, and others.

It had reportedly changed the policy a couple of years back to not allow locked devices to work on these networks, but apparently it wasn't being enforced. That has now changed. Many users have shared on Reddit that their T-Mobile locked devices no longer work on MVNOs.

Multiple users have confirmed this to be the case on not just their locked Samsung phones but also Google Pixel and other devices sold by T-Mobile. People who want to have this flexibility again now have no choice but to get their devices unlocked by T-Mobile.

That's why a lot of customers in the United States now prefer buying their Galaxy phones unlocked from Samsung. They can then choose any carrier they want and retain the flexibility to switch between carriers, whether conventional or virtual, whenever they feel like it.
