Samsung, the world’s biggest memory chip brand, has unveiled its most advanced DRAM chip for mobile devices. This LPDDR6 chip boasts faster performance and lower power consumption compared to its previous (LPDDR5X) RAM chips. It is likely to find its way into future high-end devices such as the Galaxy S26.

Samsung's LPDDR6 RAM chips offer data transfer rates of up to 10.7Gbps

Ahead of the CES 2026 expo in January, Samsung announced that its LPDDR6 DRAM chip is the 2026 Innovation Award Honoree in the Mobile Devices, Accessories & Apps category. The new memory chip is built on Samsung Foundry's 12nm process node and offers faster data transfer speeds and consumes less power compared to 8.5Gbps LPDDR5X memory chips used in current-generation laptops, phones, and tablets.

It offers up to 10.7Gbps data transfer speeds and uses an expanded I/O count to maximize the bandwidth. However, this speed is already achieved by Samsung's latest LPDDR5X DRAM chips, so it remains to be seen what practical advantages the new chip offers. It also offers improved security to protect data from falling into the wrong hands.

Samsung claims that its LPDDR6 memory chips are 21% more power efficient than LPDDR5X memory chips, thanks to an intelligent dynamic power management system. This makes them ideal for high-end mobile devices that can be edge computing nodes and offer AI workloads.

This chip could be used in next-generation high-end smartphones like the Galaxy S26 series, which is also expected to use UFS 4.1 storage. Faster RAM and storage, combined with newer-generation processors could help the Galaxy S26 offer a sizeable speed boost over older devices.

Other laptop and smartphone brands could also use this chip in their future devices that could be launched in 2026.
