While Samsung is renowned for its phones and TVs, it also designs equipment for cellular networks. Its 4G and 5G networking gear already powers networks operated by several major telecom providers, including Airtel, O2, TELUS, and Verizon, globally. To prepare for the upcoming 6G networks, the company has developed an AI solution promises enhanced network performance.
The company started developing 6G technologies six years ago.
Samsung and SK Telecom have joined hands to co-develop core 6G telecommunication technologies with a primary focus on using AI-infused radio access network (RAN) technology. The two firms have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop and test key technologies for the 6G era. The development will be led by Samsung Research and SKT's Network Technology Office.
The key technologies that the companies are developing include AI-powered channel estimation, distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) data transmission, and AI-RAN schedulers and core networking gear.
Samsung Research will develop AI-RAN technologies, while SK Telecom will offer infrastructure and data provisioning needed for a nationwide test. Both firms are contributing to 6G development as members of the AI-RAN Alliance. They submitted AI-based channel estimation, and it was officially approved as a work item. They also presented results of their research this month.
The South Korean firm mentioned earlier that it plans to launch 6G networks in South Korea in 2028

- AI-Based Channel Estimation: It predicts and corrects signals in real-time to improve network performance, especially in areas where signals are distorted by buildings or walls.
- Distributed MIMO: It allows multiple base stations and antennas to work together to transmit and receive data.
- AI-RAN: It decides how, when, and where to send data to make efficient use of resources, improving network performance even when several people are actively using the network.
