Samsung's competition in the foldable segment is largely limited to Chinese rivals, most of which aren't available in all of the markets where you can buy Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip devices.

However, things may change next year, as Apple is expected to launch its first foldable phone. When asked about Apple's potential entry into the segment, a top Samsung executive took the high road when responding.

It's confident that it can take on Apple in foldables

Bloomberg's Shery Ahn asked Samsung President and MX COO Choi Won-Joon what the company thinks about competition in the foldable space, particularly the Chinese companies that are releasing phones with better cameras.

Choi replied that instead of focusing on the competition, Samsung focuses more on its consumers and the experiences it can deliver to them. “I think healthy competition with other companies will bring more innovations and benefits to the consumer,” he said.

While being openminded to the idea of competition, Choi made a crucial point highlighting Samsung's role in advancing the foldable segment. “We are welcoming others to join this category that we created back in 2019,” referring to the original Galaxy Fold that was launched over six years ago.

When asked how Samsung will keep its edge if Apple comes out with a foldable next year, Choi's response exuded confidence. He pointed out Samsung has been making foldables for many years and it has accumulated a lot of technology and know-how. “Having another global company join this category is good for the industry and for the consumer,” Choi said.

Samsung's clearly confident that it can take on Apple in the foldable segment, and it does have the wind its sails with seven generations of foldable phones behind it, to ensure that it can effectively compete against its biggest rivals.

The company also has another reason to look forward to Apple's foldable iPhone. Apple can't make it without buying foldable panels from Samsung Display, so the Korean conglomerate will make money either way.
