Samsung was surprisingly quick to release the One UI 8 Watch update for the 2024 version of the Galaxy Watch Ultra smartwatch, but if you own the Watch 7, you've probably noticed the silence. Samsung's timeliness was exclusive to the 2024 Ultra model, and there is a dark side to Samsung's update process.
While the 2024 Galaxy Watch Ultra made an early leap to One UI 8 Watch, Samsung appears to have forgotten the Galaxy Watch 7. The Ultra model received the new update days before the Galaxy Watch 8 series went on sale globally. The Watch 7 didn't enjoy the same early release, and its One UI 8 Watch update is still missing.
In theory, this shouldn't have happened. After all, the original Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 7 debuted on the same day in 2024, and they share the same base hardware, including the same SoC and BioActive sensor.
Furthermore, both the Galaxy Watch Ultra and the Galaxy Watch 7 participated in the One UI 8 Watch beta program in South Korea and the USA. You'd think that they were both ready to receive the stable build once the beta program concluded.
Even so, days and weeks went by without a trace of One UI 8 Watch on the Galaxy Watch 7, and it's starting to look more and more like Samsung is giving the Ultra model preferential treatment.
For some of us, this delay seems almost artificial, which is quite disheartening, especially for Galaxy Watch 7 users waiting for One UI 8 Watch.
Remember that, hardware-wise, the Galaxy Watch 7 is just as capable of running One UI 8 Watch as the Ultra model. The main difference is that the Watch 7 doesn't have the so-called Cushion Design, and I think it would be quite a stretch for Samsung to blame the delay on this aspect.
On the bright side, Samsung confirmed today that more smartwatches will receive the One UI 8 Watch update before the end of the year. On the not-so-bright side, Samsung didn't mention anything concrete about the Galaxy Watch 7.
Worse yet, Samsung failed to communicate precisely which new One UI 8 Watch features will be available for the Galaxy Watch 7 and whether or not there will be a difference between it and the Ultra variant. The more we wait for the update to roll out, the more bothersome this becomes.
Let's hope Samsung soon realizes it shouldn't have treated the Galaxy Watch 7 any differently. Or at least, let's hope for a concrete explanation.

It almost feels like Samsung is purposefully holding back the Watch 7
