Samsung was the first brand in the world to launch a mass-market smartphone with a foldable display. It is also the company that has offered the highest number of foldable phones, and has launched them more consistently than its rivals. The tech giant’s latest phones with foldable displays are also arguably the best in the segment. With that, one would expect it to be the number one brand in the foldable phone space. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
Counterpoint Research has published an analysis on the foldable smartphone market in Q2 2025. According to it, Samsung is not first, not second, but third on the shipment chart with a 9% market share. In the first and second places are Huawei and Motorola with 45% and 28% market shares respectively. In comparison, Samsung had a 21% market share in Q2 2024, ranking second on the chart. Huawei and Motorola had 32% and 14% market shares.

Counterpoint Research says that the majority of smartphones with foldable displays are shipped to China. As such, these charts are heavily influenced by the sales of foldable phones in the country, where, Huawei is a major player in the segment for reasons beyond hardware and software capabilities, price, and after sales service, such as patriotism and love towards the homegrown brand.
However, that’s not the only reason why the South Korean tech giant is third on the chart. In Q2 2025, it was selling the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6, which didn’t bring as significant improvements as people were expecting. Plus, many were waiting for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7. As such, the company may not have been able to sell those phones very well.
That shouldn’t be the case in Q3 2025. In July 2025, Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which bring massive improvements over their predecessors, and have been an instant hit in the market. Reportedly, Samsung planned to produce 320,000 and 200,000 units of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in August and September respectively. However, looking at the increasing demand, the brand had to produce 430,000 units in last month and is planning to make 260,000 units in September.
With that, Samsung should sell higher Galaxy Z series phones in Q3 2025 than in Q2 2025, and could even emerge as the number one brand in the segment. The company’s upcoming Galaxy Z TriFold, a phone with a tri-folding display should help it even further.

Where did Samsung go wrong?

Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 should help Samsung pounce back
