Over the past couple of years, Samsung has been collaborating with Google and Qualcomm for the development of smart glasses and XR headsets. The company's first smart glasses could hit store shelves sometime next year. And in 2027, the South Korean firm's second-generation smart glasses could launch to compete with Apple's smart glasses.

Apple Glass could be missing a critical visual element

Samsung's first smart glasses would be like Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, featuring a camera, loudspeakers, microphones, and a power-efficient processor. They reportedly won't have a display, so you have to control them through voice commands. The company's second-generation glasses will reportedly feature an AR display for visuals, and that will be its biggest advantage over Apple's first-generation smart glasses.

According to a report from noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple's first-generation smart glasses will be similar to the current Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses and won't have an AR display. They will feature audio playback and video recording. They are expected to be launched in 2027, and Apple expects to sell 3-5 million (or more) units of these glasses.

The report indicates that Apple's first smart glasses can be controlled via voice commands and gestures. They will reportedly be available in multiple frame and temple material options. Thanks to the camera, the glasses will be able to detect the user's environment.

So, by the time Samsung is expected to launch its AR display-equipped smart glasses, Apple will launch its first-generation smart glasses that do not have a screen. Having a display will offer Samsung's smart glasses a massive advantage over Apple's, as it can display information, such as messages, notifications, directions on the map, shopping assistance, and more, on its screen. It will feature the Gemini AI assistant, which is much better than what Apple has in the form of Siri.
