NFC-based file transfers have been out of vogue for some time now but it appears that Samsung may be bringing them back with One UI 8.5.
There has been a steady stream of information about Samsung's next major update ever since a firmware was leaked. The latest findings suggest that Quick Share may enable NFC-based file sharing with One UI 8.5.
The relevant strings in One UI 8.5 were discovered by Android Authority. The descriptions within the code make it clear that this “experimental feature” will enable users to share files with nearby devices via Quick Share over NFC.
Since it's been described as an experimental feature, it's likely that NFC-based file sharing in Quick Share may not be enabled by default. Users may have to enable the option manually. Further details reveal that this feature will let users play an animation which they may be able to configure.
The way this is shaping up suggests that Samsung might be working on a iOS-inspired NameDrop UX for its custom software. NameDrop lets iPhone and Apple Watch owners share contact information by bringing their devices together. In fact, the One UI 8.5 animations for this feature have also leaked online and at least one of them looks quite similar to the NameDrop UX on iOS.
Since it's still early days, it can't be said for sure if Samsung is merely testing ideas or if everything that's emerging in the One UI 8.5 leaks will end up seeing the light of day. Only time will tell.
