The US is an important market for Samsung's phones, particularly its flagship devices, but latest market data shows that the company faced some headwinds in Q1 2025. Its Galaxy S devices in particular saw sales decline compared to Q1 2024.
The premium segment saw weakness in the US overall, as Q1 2025 sales were down 2% year-over-year. Even Apple saw its flagship sales decline in its home country compared over the same period last year.
The latest market data from Counterpoint shows that sales in the premium segment of smartphones worth $800 and above declined in the United States. Samsung's flagship sales were down year-over-year due to lower demand for the Galaxy S flagships.
Apple saw lower sales as well but it improved its share at the big three US carriers from 70% in Q1 2024 to 72% in Q1 2025. This was made possible due to the weak demand for Samsung flagships and the iPhone 16e launch in this period.
The report points out that carriers tried to offset the market's weak demand through lucrative device promotions. Verizon and AT&T in particular offered Galaxy S25 Ultra units for free in Q1 2025 to drum up demand, “something which has never before happened with a Galaxy Ultra device, says Senior Research Analyst Maurice Klaehne.
Significant uncertainty still exists for the US smartphone market in 2025 as the impact of tariffs is yet to be ascertained. Vietnam, where Samsung phones are made, has been hit by steep tariffs, which could potentially force Samsung to raise prices in the US, and might cause demand to drop even further.
Apple faces a similar issue as the bulk of its iPhone production is in China which has been hit by the highest tariffs. Both Apple and Samsung are likely to move production of devices meant for the US to India which has a considerably lower tariff rate.
