Samsung's due to launch One UI 8 Watch, which will bring Google's Wear OS 6, in the coming months. The new smartwatches Samsung launches this year will be the first to run the new software out of the box, before it's gradually released for eligible models.
However, there's a possibility that this update could either be the last major release or may not be rolled out for the very first Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watch models that were released when Samsung made the shift from Tizen.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic back in August 2021. These were the first devices to be powered by Wear OS, moving Samsung's wearables away from its homegrown Tizen OS. All future models have come with the Android-powered Wear OS.
Both of these devices were said to receive four years of Android OS upgrades. It raises the possibility that the Wear OS 6 One UI 8 Watch may be the final major software update for these models. However, as 9to5Google rightly flags, it's possible that these smartwatches may not get the update at all.
Samsung's due to launch its latest smartwatches in July and they'll come with One UI 8 Watch out of the box. It will then take the company a couple of months to roll out this update for existing models like the Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra.
The four year software support commitment for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic ends in August 2025. If the update isn't rolled out for these models by then, there's a very real possibility that they won't get the update, as Samsung typically doesn't extend support timelines.
Things should become more clear once One UI Watch 8 is released for existing models. The only thing Galaxy Watch 4 owners can do right now is keep their fingers crossed.
