Secure Folder exists as a secure enclave within your Galaxy device. Apps, data, and content moved to the Secure Folder can't be accessed without authentication. It's also protected with Samsung Knox encryption for added peace of mind.

Early previews of One UI 8 suggest that Samsung will be refining several features through its next major update. New information suggests that the company will also be beefing up the security for its Secure Folder.

Samsung moving Secure Folder to Android's private space API

Secure Folder uses Android's work profile, which is a separate managed profile that lets users store work apps and data separately from personal apps and data on the same device. Samsung addressed a security lapse earlier this year when it was found that the Android system photo picker, that's the menu which lets you select photos in a social media app, was revealing photos outside the Secure Folder.

The photo picker can display contents inside the work profile if it was activated on the device. This vulnerability was only present on One UI 7 and not earlier versions, and would only reveal media files if they were not encrypted. Nevertheless, it allowed a window into the secure environment which shouldn't happen.

It has emerged that One UI 8 makes a fundamental change to Secure Folder, as it will use Android's private space API instead of work profile. Private space exists as a separate enclave on the Android system where apps and data can be kept locked away from the main file system. The photo picker can't access any files inside the private space which it's locked.

Secure Folder moving from work profile to private space will improve its security immensely. Samsung hasn't provided any One UI 8 launch details yet, but reports indicate that the One UI 8 beta program may launch as early as next month with the public release taking place after the new foldables are launched in July.
