The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the first foldable in Samsung’s lineup with a cover screen that feels somewhat normal. Past models always felt too tall, too narrow, and too awkward for anything beyond quick tasks. This time, the cover screen, 6.5 inches in size, finally strikes a comfortable balance between usable screen real estate and overall compactness.

And yet, that’s exactly where my problem with it begins. The outer display on the Fold 7 is big enough that I no longer feel the need to unfold the phone. I still open it from time to time, but it’s now a deliberate choice rather than a natural habit. With previous models, the cover screen's awkward proportions practically pushed you to unfold the device whenever you wanted to get serious work done.

I’ve long argued that smaller cover screens on foldables make sense. Not because I wanted to excuse Samsung’s design choices in earlier Folds, but because they ensured you got your money’s worth out of the foldable form factor. When the outer screen felt restrictive, you instinctively unfolded the device and took full advantage of what made it special in the first place.

The Fold 7 has proven me right. I love this phone, especially its remarkably slim design. But in terms of delivering on the promise of a foldable, it falls short. The very thing that makes it feel like a “normal” phone also makes it harder to justify the point of owning one. And while I’m genuinely happy for everyone who wanted Samsung to finally make the cover screen bigger, I can’t say I’m a fan of the change.

Could the Galaxy Tri-Fold fix this?

Given my feelings on this, perhaps Samsung’s rumored tri-fold smartphone will be a potential solution for me? Even if the tri-fold’s cover screen is as large as the Fold 7’s, the significantly larger inner display might still entice me to unfold it.

The biggest motivator for me would be media: a much wider inner screen means watching movies and videos without those massive black bars above and below. That kind of experience would finally give me the push (or at least one reason) I need to unfold my phone more often. And make me feel like I’m using a foldable the way it’s meant to be used.

No problem with bigger cover screen?
