Samsung has a lot riding on the Exynos 2600. This will be the company's first high-end chip to be used at scale in its flagship Galaxy S lineup in a couple of years. Samsung seeks to re-establish the Exynos brand and reduce its reliance on Qualcomm for flagship chipsets.

Early reports paint a promising picture about the chipset. Samsung foundry's yields are also said to be on the higher side which will make mass production feasible. Wafer testing is also a crucial part of semiconductor manufacturing, and Samsung has reportedly trusted that to LB Semicon.

All signs point to higher Exynos 2600 volumes

LB Semicon conducts semiconductor assembly tests. It's a company of the LB Group under the umbrella of LG, another major Korean conglomerate. Samsung has reportedly brought LB Semicon as the third wafer testing partner for the Exynos 2600. The company is reportedly bringing equipment to the Anseong factory to work on this project.

LB Semicon has previously handled wafer testing for Samsung as well, but largely for its mid-range Exynos chipset and those made for the Google Pixel phones. This is the first time that it will handle testing for a flagship Exynos chip.

The purpose of wafer testing is to determine whether individual chips in a semiconductor wafer are defective. This is done through an analysis of the wafer's electrical characteristics formed in the circuit pattern. A packaging test is conducted thereafter to ensure that the finished chip works properly.

Samsung's previous testing partners, Dosantes and Nepass, are also helping out with wafer testing for the Exynos 2600. With Samsung bringing on three partners to test wafers of its latest flagship chip, it shows that the company intends to ship significant volumes of this chip, which is why it needs an additional partner for quality assurance.
