Every time Apple launches a new iPhone, the same debate pops up: is it better than the latest Galaxy? This year, it’s the iPhone Air versus the Galaxy S25 Edge, two phones their makers hope will bring in the ultra-slim smartphone revolution.

Apple’s phone is thinner by 0.2mm, and thanks to smart optimization, it even manages battery life that matches or beats the S25 Edge despite having a much smaller cell. That’s impressive. But does that make it the better phone overall?

Not quite. The iPhone Air may be lighter and sleeker, but that’s largely because Apple cut certain features. It has one fewer camera, only a single speaker, and a chipset with fewer cores. The device is still very powerful overall, but those design choices do come with trade-offs.

The S25 Edge, on the other hand, offers more across the board. It offers extra cameras for different types of shots, stereo speakers for richer sound, and a battery that should maintain its capacity far longer over years of use compared to the iPhone Air. Samsung could have made the device thinner as well, but it chose not to sacrifice features that many people want in their daily life.

This isn’t about one phone being clearly better. Apple users prefer iOS, along with simplicity and the way Apple devices work seamlessly together, and they’re willing to give up certain features to keep that experience. Samsung users value choice, versatility, and power, and they don’t mind a slightly thicker device if it means getting more features.

So is the iPhone Air better than the Galaxy S25 Edge? No. It’s different. Apple’s idea of better is stripping down. Samsung’s idea of better is giving you as much as possible in a package. What matters is which approach fits you, and which operating system you prefer.

But let’s not pretend thinness, or even battery optimization, alone makes the iPhone Air superior. The S25 Edge shows you can have premium design and features, all without cutting corners.
