Although I have been using the Galaxy S24+ since early 2024, I never truly retired my old Galaxy S22+. Granted, I barely use the S22+ nowadays, but it has been sitting on my desk all this time, and I kept it up to date with the latest firmware. Speaking of which, the phone just got One UI 8.0, and I have some thoughts about it.

While I haven't had the time to test One UI 8.0 on the Galaxy S22+ for long, my first impressions are surprisingly positive. In fact, the phone feels a little more responsive now than it did running One UI 7.0. I think it just got better, which is quite a feat for a phone from February 2022.

But despite One UI 8 seemingly being a great update for the phone, it's hard not to notice some downgrades when going back from my current S24+ daily driver to my aging S22+.

First things first, the Galaxy S22+ doesn't support Now Brief. To me, this isn't a huge loss, but the truth is that Now Brief is one of the AI-based features that define the newer-generation Galaxy phones. Without it, the S22+ feels rather dated.

And although the Galaxy S22+ UI seems smoother and more responsive now than it did before One UI 8.0, I am certainly noticing hiccups and lag spikes across the UI and in certain apps, especially when comparing it to my newer Galaxy S24+.

Generally speaking, the more I used the Galaxy S24+ over the past year and a half, the harder it felt to occasionally go back to the S22+. And now is no different, even though One UI 8 seems like a great upgrade so far.

I have also noticed that one of my favorite features, i.e., split-screen multi-window mode, suffers from lower performance on my Galaxy S22+. I can't confirm if this behavior is caused by One UI 8, but most apps exhibit noticeably laggier scrolling animations in split-screen mode than otherwise.

Other things I can't ignore about the Galaxy S22+

If you are looking for a different perspective from an S24+ user, I do have a few other thoughts about the S22+ in 2025, though they aren't related to One UI 8.

One is that I really seem to have gotten used to the full-screen Always On Display feature since I got my S24+. And going back to the S22+ is awkward. It feels like I am using an incomplete phone, and in a way, I am.

The screen on the S22+ is also noticeably dimmer and, more importantly, has a different Vision Booster profile, which is extremely noticeable when going back to the 2022 phone.

The best way I can describe it is that the Galaxy S22+ screen looks a bit murkier to my eyes than it used to a few years ago. The screen's properties haven't changed, but my perception of it has because I got used to the superior display on the S24+.

The S22's screen bezels also look a little thicker than I remember. But on the positive side, somehow the S22+ still feels better in my hand even after all this time. Whether it's because it's marginally thinner, narrower, and lighter (or a combination of all three) is unclear. It might just be the slightly curved frame that gives the S22+ a more comfortable grip.

But would I go back to the Galaxy S22+ in 2025? Not if I had a better choice. The Galaxy S24+ feels like a much better phone, and I'm sure the S25+ does, too.

However, I will say that if you are still rocking the Galaxy S22+ in 2025, One UI 8 seems to have made the phone a little better, and you don't need to rush to an upgrade just yet. The way I see it, Galaxy S22+ owners have three options:

    • Keep using the phone for a while longer and see what the future One UI 8.5 update holds next year, then look for an upgrade in 2027 if One UI 8.5 feels reliable enough.
    • Upgrade to the Galaxy S25 series this year if you can find an amazing deal on Black Friday or the holiday shopping season, which is just around the corner.
    • Wait until the Galaxy S26 series is out in early 2026 and see what upgrade options you have, whether it's a Plus, a Pro, an Edge, or an Ultra. Time will tell.

For now, I hope my fellow Galaxy S22+ users will enjoy One UI 8.0 and won't run into any unforeseen issues.
