On the one hand, Samsung has become one of the most consistent brands, particularly in the mobile segment, where leaks and rumors run rampant. On the other hand, you never know what Samsung might pull out of its hat the moment you look away.

Case in point: last year, Samsung introduced The Movingstyle. This 27-inch touchscreen appeared out of nowhere, and I was simultaneously baffled and intrigued.

I still haven’t decided if The Movingstyle is a wild experiment or a gadget worth loving. And if you’re wondering what it actually is… join the club. I've been thinking about it occasionally, and I'm still not sure I decoded it. But here's what I think.

TV? Monitor? Digital canvas? Rolling whiteboard? Or something else entirely?

In essence, The Movingstyle is a 27-inch touchscreen equipped with Dolby Atmos speakers and a 3-hour battery. It's designed to be portable and can be leaned against its built-in kickstand or mounted on a tall, rollable floor stand. The same kickstand acts as a handle for easier transportation.

Similar to Samsung's smart monitors, The Movingstyle runs Tizen OS — Samsung's TV operating system. It even supports Now Brief and comes with its own Samsung TV remote. Even so, it's not actually a proper TV.

In fact, while we try to figure out what it is, I think it might be easier to describe what The Movingstyle isn't.

Not a TV, even if it streams TV Plus

At first glance, The Movingstyle looks like a TV — it even comes with a TV remote — but don’t let that fool you, because it isn’t one in any meaningful sense. There’s no coaxial input, which means it can’t replace your living room TV unless you are perfectly happy with streaming everything over Wi-Fi.

If you were thinking about connecting The Movingstyle to Samsung's One Connect Box and turn it into a proper TV that way, you can't. The One Connect Box and Movingstyle are incompatible.

Samsung TV Plus works, and sure, you can enjoy your favorite channels that way, but don’t even think about connecting it to a One Connect Box, because it won’t work.

One consolation is that it supports the Samsung Art Store, so if nothing else, The Movingstyle can sit in your space looking like it belongs even when you might not know exactly what you’re supposed to do with it.

Not a proper PC monitor, though it can fill in

Samsung's Movingstyle display comes with a kickstand that doubles as a handle and a rolling floor stand. That makes it portable in the loosest sense of the word. But neither is built for long hours of desktop work.

You could technically use it as a monitor if you’re in a pinch. But it’s not going to replace a real Samsung PC monitor with a proper ergonomic stand and multiple ports.

In fact, with only one USB-C DisplayPort and a single HDMI port, it limits you to plugging in just one or two devices at a time. That makes it feel like a temporary solution at best rather than a serious workstation.

Not a tablet, even with a big touchscreen

At 27 inches and nearly 57 lb (26 kilos), this thing is portable only if you happen to have arms like a superhero. Unless you're a mythical giant, you won't want to carry The Movingstyle with you everywhere you go. So, yes, it is technically portable, but not like a tablet. It's more movable than portable.

Furthermore, the touchscreen doesn't support the S Pen, and the system isn't based on Android. So you can forget about cool One UI cross-device features like app continuity.

So what is it? I would define it as a lifestyle display… maybe for campers

Because the TV DNA that makes up part of The Movingstyle allows Galaxy tablets and phones to run DeX, I'm tempted to call this a portable DeX screen.

And it could be that, particularly if you intend on using it as a sort of portable whiteboard for spreadsheets or presentations. Still, that seems very niche, and calling it a DeX screen feels like a stretch. I suspect DeX was the last thing on Samsung's mind when designing this thing.

I'm also tempted to describe The Movingstyle as an interesting option for console gamers who might be searching for a decent (and decently sized) portable Samsung display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Then again, the screen has a QHD rather than a UHD 4K resolution, so it's not a perfect choice for the more powerful gaming consoles out there.

For one, Movingstyle implies that this is a so-called “lifestyle” product. And in this particular case, the product appears to have a “jack of all trades and a master of none” approach.

But what lifestyle is that? It's up to you, and I think Samsung wants to let you decide.

I, for one, am beginning to think that The Movingstyle could be a fantastic TV for camping or vanlife. Hence the “moving” part of the name. If you have a dynamic lifestyle and are often on the move but don't want to give up modern luxuries, The Movingstyle could become one of your favorite gadgets.

Of course, these are just one person's thoughts, and you might have a completely different opinion about Samsung's portable display. But that's kind of what makes it intriguing.

Tempted to buy The Movingstyle? You probably already have a definition for it; feel free to share your thoughts on our social media channels.
