The mobile industry didn't care much about thinness in recent years, at least not outside of China. For a while, phones appeared to have reached a balance between thinness and (battery) specs. However, things changed in 2025, and now, Samsung is showing off again with the brand-new, ultra-thin Galaxy Z TriFold.

Samsung's first dual-hinged phone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, has a 12.9mm profile when folded. That doesn't sound all that impressive next to the Galaxy Z Fold 7's 8.9mm profile, until you remember that the TriFold folds not once, but twice. And when unfolded, it measures only 3.9mm at its thinnest point.

However, measuring the Galaxy Z TriFold isn't that simple, as it turns out. It may be 3.9mm at its thinnest point, but some sides are thicker than others.

How thin is it? We have at least three answers, all correct

Here's one highly unusual aspect of Samsung's first dual-hinged device. Each of the phone's three sides has a different thickness, making it harder to make a concrete claim. But here's what we know so far.

    • The thinnest side of the Galaxy Z TriFold, the left-most side when open, measures 3.9mm.
    • The center side, the one that has the cover screen, measures 4.2mm.
    • The right-most side, the one featuring the side buttons and camera housing, measures 4.0mm (without the camera housing).

All of these measurements exclude the thickness of the pre-installed protective film. And according to these numbers, it means that the Galaxy Z TriFold doesn't have the same thinness from one end to the other. It's thickest in the middle and tapers off a little bit on both sides.

You may have also noticed that adding the three numbers, i.e., 3.9mm, 4.2mm, and 4.0mm, equals 12.1mm rather than the phone's 12.9mm thickness. What gives?

Well, it seems that the Galaxy Z TriFold leaves a “minimal gap,” as Samsung calls it, between the three panels when folded. The phone doesn't close completely flat. Even so, these differences are very small and will probably go unnoticed by most people in real-world usage scenarios.

The camera housing is thicker than the phone itself

On a final note, here's one other Galaxy Z TriFold quirk. Its camera housing is thicker than the phone itself.

Or, at the very least, it looks that way. Samsung didn't specify how thick the Galaxy Z TriFold is with the camera housing included, so we can't extrapolate. But the image below pretty much confirms this design quirk.

Unless you count unusual, experimental phones like the old Galaxy S4 Zoom from 2013, the Galaxy Z TriFold is Samsung's first phone with a camera housing that is thicker than the phone itself (when unfolded).

That's not to say the phone has an incredibly state-of-the-art camera. Sure, it has a 200MP main shooter, yet its zoom capabilities aren't that spectacular. But its thinness around the camera housing is exactly that: spectacular.

We've officially reached the point where phones can now be thinner than their camera housings alone. But, to be fair, the Galaxy Z TriFold is anything but a conventional phone, so this probably won't become a widespread trend.
