This isn't something I will ever be proud of, but I have been a smoker almost all my adult life. However, I have been fighting this bad habit for the past couple of years or so. It's not easy to admit this, but for me, the process hasn't been straightforward.

I'm writing this not in search of compassion but to tell you that my Galaxy Watch has been one of my weapons against smoking. It's surprising, even for me, but it is the truth.

Mind you, I won't claim that my Galaxy Watch made me quit smoking or that my data is scientific. But I will say that wearing the Watch highlighted a health factor that worried me. And in doing so, this helped me fight the habit with more conviction.

Noticing changes in blood oxygen levels during sleep

When I say the process of quitting hasn't been straightforward, I'm referring to the fact that I've been on and off cigarettes a few times over the past few years.

It's nothing to brag about, but that's how it went for me. I've quit for a few months, picked up the bad habit again for a few more months, then pushed back against it.

This process repeated itself a few times, and it's not easy to admit it. It only goes to show how strong a grasp nicotine has had on me. And it might highlight a lack of conviction. But it is what it is.

More importantly for me, through repeating this vicious cycle, all the while wearing my Watch almost daily and nightly, I have noticed the effects smoking had on my oxygen levels during sleep.

Often, in the periods when I smoked cigarettes daily, my blood oxygen during sleep could fall below 90% for anywhere between 10 and 40 minutes.

It didn't happen every night, but it happened often enough for me to worry and pay more attention to this. Those readings weren't normal, and I couldn't always chalk them up to reading errors — which can happen, as the Galaxy Watch isn't infallible.

In contrast, during periods of non-smoking, my blood oxygen readings during sleep have been much more consistently positive. They rarely, if ever, show a drop in oxygen below 90% for more than a few minutes per night. And sometimes, the spikes in oxygen drops were clearly caused by errors.

To be clear, this is in no way a conclusive scientific experiment. And in no way am I recommending going on and off cigarettes as I did. I didn't do it to conduct an experiment, but for the simple fact that I caved in to my weakness.

What you're reading isn't an attempt at a scientific paper. I am merely sharing my experience. But as far as I'm concerned, my Galaxy Watch helped me realize that smoking does seem to have a destructive effect on my sleep at the very least.

This seemingly explained why I almost always had trouble waking up and feeling refreshed in the morning while smoking. Different blood oxygen levels during sleep could explain that.

I don't want to turn this story into a purchase recommendation. I won't recommend a Galaxy Watch as an anti-smoking tool. That just doesn't feel right. And I can't tell if smoking cigarettes has the same effect on other people's sleep.

However, I can recommend the Galaxy Watch as a helpful tool if you want to improve your fitness or health in various ways.

My data might not be scientifically conclusive. Or it might be unintentionally biased, even if I tried to avoid it. Either way, I can't negate the fact that the Galaxy Watch had a positive effect on my personal journey. It helped me fight the habit. And sometimes, a little bit of extra help is all you need.

If you are in a similar predicament or are fighting any other bad habits and want to change that, I hope you will, regardless of whether or not you have a Galaxy Watch on your wrist.
