Samsung recently announced that it will fully unveil its first XR headset on October 21. This device would be the world’s first to run Google’s Android XR operating system. Just days before the launch, Google accidentally revealed what it would be like to use the headset.

Google highlights apps and games for Galaxy XR headset

A new editorial page on the Google Play Store was recently spotted by a Reddit user. It reveals what immersive experiences (apps and games optimized for XR) we can expect on the Galaxy XR headset. Besides revealing the design of Samsung's headset, the page discusses about four such experiences, including Asteroid, Naver CHZZK XR, NFL Pro Era, and Vacation Simulator.

Asteroid is an immersive puzzel game where you have to piece together clues to solve a space mystery. Naver CHZZK XR is a VR video streaming service where you can watch immersive videos from several creators. NFL Pro Era is a game that lets you play american football from the point of view of the player (FPV) itself.

Vacation Simulator is a relaxation game in which you can go on a virtual vacation. You can relax or “join the gig economy to help fund your virtual travel.” Since the company is expected to showcase some of the best apps and games it has in its editorial page, the launch doesn't seem very promising, at least compared to the launch of the Apple Vision Pro.

Galaxy XR needs killer apps and preserverance to succeed

The Vision Pro debuted with 600 apps and games, including Disney+, HBO Max, IMAX, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, MLB, Paramount+, PGA Tour Vision, TikTok, Tubi, Webex, and Zoom. It can also stream a Mac's screen wirelessly. However, despite such strong collection of apps and desktop streaming, Vision Pro is widely considered a flop due to low sales.

Google has developed immersive first-party apps like Google Chrome, Google Maps, Google Meet, Google TV, and YouTube. A recent leak revealed apps like Calm, MLB, and Netflix as well. It will be able to run all Android apps and games in a windowed mode. It remains to be seen how the headset will sell and if there is a killer app that would attract people to buy the headset.

The Galaxy XR is expected to be priced anywhere between $1,800 and $2,500. That would make it at least $500 more affordable than the Vision Pro.

Samsung’s first Galaxy XR features a pair of Micro OLED displays with a 90Hz refresh rate, at least 16GB RAM, and numerous sensors and cameras for environmental understanding and gesture recognition. While its hardware is comparable to the Vision Pro, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is not as powerful as the M2 chip in the first-generation Vision Pro, and it falls short of matching the M5 chip in the second-generation Vision Pro headset.
